Carmel City Councilman Jason Burnett wants a public discussion of three big issues facing the city:

  • Sexual harassment settlement: a review of city policies that led to the $600,000 payment awarded to former Human Resources Manager Jane Miller to settle her claim
  • CalPERS: the creation of an advisory committee to come up with ways to meet the city's public employee retirement system obligation
  • Flanders Mansion: consideration of options like sale, lease, or curatorship to resolve the long-standing controversy over whether to preserve or sell the historic home

But he's hit a roadblock when it comes to getting them on the City Council agenda.

At the Sept. 14 City Council meeting, Burnett confronted Mayor Sue McCloud.

"I've submitted three agenda requests...I wonder if you can tell me and the public when they'll be on the agenda?"

Burnett invoked a Grand Jury report of several years ago that urged the city to do more of its business in public, but McCloud responded, "I don't know if we need to spend time now...let's talk about it offline."

Watch for the skirmish to continue both in and out of public view.
