While some newsrooms now have screens showing real-time user information, encouraging click-baity stuff, the Weekly remains devoted to print first. That didn’t stop us from revisiting a list of the 20 most-clicked stories of the year, showing the range of readers’ interests, from weather to immigration to pop culture.
20) The biggest condor recovery milestone yet: a second-generation wild-born condor, Aug. 10.
Condor 538 (Miracle) and Condor 574 (Nomad), got together and made the first known nest of wild-born California condors in the state since 1985.
19) Celebrities tee off at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Feb. 8.
Bill Murray, Toby Keith, Kenny G and Larry the Cable Guy were among the celebrities to play. Some spectators come for the golf, others for the autographs.
18) ICE agents arrest 19 in raids in Salinas and South County, June 12.
Of the 54 people arrested in seven California counties, 45 had prior criminal convictions, according to ICE. Most of those convictions, 16, were for DUIs.
17) Monterey home serves as a trap for 19 unlicensed contractors in sting operation, June 30.
Some bids were as high as $13,000 – well over the legal limit of $500 – for anyone offering services without a contractor’s license. All 19 suspects were issued misdemeanor citations.
16) Massive fire destroys an empty building in Salinas’ Chinatown,” March 18.
The fire was accidentally started by a homeless man’s cooking pit, and destroyed the former Swinging Door building.
15) World’s largest residential cruise ship anchored in Monterey, June 20.
“The World” has 165 private residences with a mix of studios and one – and two-bedroom apartments.
14) Miley Cyrus’ latest music video, “Malibu,” is filmed on Garrapata State Beach, May 13.
She sings about SoCal but the video features classic Central California scenes: the rocky shore, fields of ice plant, blooming wild radish flowers.
13) Crews contain York Fire wildfire near Laguna Seca, Oct. 15.
The 30-acre wildfire, east of South Boundary Road near Laguna Seca, burned brush, grasses and small trees. Fifty people were evacuated from their homes.
12) Frutti De Mar opens its downtown Monterey spot with love and family, July 28.
When Tito and Sonia Perez relocated their beloved restaurant, many loyalists wrote in woeful about losing their go-to Marina spot, but with congratulations on the upgrade.
11) Cannery Row’s huge Blue Fin Cafe & Billiards to close, Aug. 29.
The venue had hosted live music, darts, billiard tables and popular dancing nights – but also had security issues, including a December 2016 stabbing.
10) A visual tour of the Big Sur “Island,” July 20.
From February through July, with the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on Highway 1 out to the north and Paul’s Slide blocking access to the south, Big Sur was inaccessible by car. A bypass trail enabled hikers to walk to the “island,” and it became something of a tourist attraction, even after vehicle access reopened from the south.
9) A look at reborn Jacks Monterey as it opens (and menus), April 26.
This beautiful redo of the restaurant and bar inside the Portola Hotel & Spa was worth salivating over just from a design standpoint, not to mention the menu.
8) Barn owls make Haute Enchilada home in Moss Landing, Feb. 8.
Restaurateur Kim Solano put up barn owl box as rodent control. It worked – and the resident owls became minor stars. A livestream video feed showed off the pair, named Teco and Lotte (the Spanish word for owl is tecolote) – and the hatching of their eight eggs.
7) Narcotics task force searches cannabis grower’s home, July 20.
The San Benito County Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team served a search warrant on the Salinas home of Mike Hackett, who operates a legal cannabis-cultivation business and nursery south of Salinas. Hackett was kept handcuffed in his driveway before being released – without being arrested or charged.
6) Two dead and two injured in Salinas shooting, Jan. 12.
Less than two weeks into the year, and four people in Salinas were murdered. As of Dec. 22, the homicide count was 29.
5) Heavy storms lead to flooding, power outages and evacuations in Salinas, Feb. 20.
There was some respite for California’s persistent drought last winter, but it came at the cost of severe weather, including flooding in the Bolsa Knolls neighborhood.
4) Heavy wind and rains ravage Monterey County, cut power to 30,000 PG&E customers, Feb. 17.
In Big Sur, 5.5 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period, causing flooding and landslides.
3) Carmel Valley homes flood after heavy rains, Jan. 9.
Weather was a theme of winter 2017. The Carmel River overflowed, flooding at least 10 homes on Paso Hondo.
2) Great white shark attacks kayak off Cannery Row, March 31.
This story, of a kayaker who was thrown from his boat then rescued by a sailboat, generated dozens of letters, many doubting the facts of the story – until a hotel guest posted a video taken from his window, showing the attack unfold.
1) Highway 1 bridge in Big Sur closes indefinitely, Feb. 16.
When officials first observed the cracked support column under Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers said, “It’s a situation that is still evolving. It’s too soon to know if the bridge will need to be replaced.”
