Highest-ranked players at the 2016 AT&T Pro-Am.

Editor’s note: Maybe it is all in a name. The definitive celebrity-pro golf tournament dropped “national” from the title, and suddenly the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am enjoys more world-ranked pros than it has in a decade. Or maybe it’s the marshal uniform shift from red shirts and socks to blue and plaid, respectively, that drew all the big dogs. Whatever the case, here’s are the picks from the Weekly’s ringer of a handicapper, former college scholarship ace Shane Mason and current nuclear threat manager, as he goes through his annual picks:

Jordan Spieth (World Rank: 1): The Golden Boy of American golf and the number-one golfer in the world is making his fourth AT&T appearance. He’s finished in the top 10 his last two appearances, and shot all four rounds in the 60s last year. The small greens and fairways on the Peninsula fit his precision game well; this season he’s number one in strokes gained putting and from tee-to-green. Although the 22-year-old Texas native never won in California, expect that drought to end this week. The coastal links and poa annua-grass greens are reminiscent of Chambers Bay, where Spieth won last year’s U.S. Open by 1 over Dustin Johnson.

Jason Day (World Rank: 2): The Wonder from Down Under is coming off the best season of his career in 2015. The 28-year-old Aussie bagged five wins, including the PGA Championship, over Spieth, and more than $9 million in prize money. Unlike Spieth, Day plays the power game. He averaged 313 yards with his driver last year, and led the tour in birdies per-round (4.7). Day has used his high-arcing irons to success at the AT&T, finishing in the top 10 three times in his five starts on the coast. He took a three-month break from the game this offseason, and needs to shake off some rust and avoid the big block off the tee – his Achilles’ heel – to be in contention late on Sunday.

Bubba Watson (World Rank: 4): The Bomber from Bagdad, Florida, and the fourth-ranked player in the world will be wielding his pink-shafted driver at the AT&T for the first time in eight years. His appearances in 2006 and 2007 were disappointing – a missed cut and a T-44 suggests the long-hitting Watson didn’t take to the small greens at Pebble. Although he averaged 315 yards with the driver last season, Big Bubba plays a big right-to-left slice off the tee, meaning he’ll have to avoid Stillwater Cove on holes 4-10 at Pebble. Watson’s game has shown a lot of maturity the last few years, however, so expect a solid top-20 finish this week.

Justin Rose (World Rank: 7): Rose needs to bring some heat back to a putter that was ice cold in 2015. The Englishman and seventh-ranked player in the game ranked 100th out of roughly 180 players on the tour in strokes gained putting last year. If Rose is to bag his first U.S. win west of the Mississippi, he’ll need to marshal his stellar iron play and roll the rock better. If not, Rose won’t crack the top 20.

Dustin Johnson (World Rank: 8): The two-time AT&T champ is looking for the Monterey hat trick in 2016. Johnson – son-in-law of Wayne Gretzky, who knows a thing or two about hat tricks – has used his driver to overpower the courses on the Peninsula. DJ ranked first in driving distance last season, averaging a staggering 317 yards off the tee box, and is averaging 321 yards in 2016. Johnson definitely has good vibes at Pebble: In addition to his two wins at the AT&T, he led the 2010 U.S. Open after 54 holes. If Dustin can tame his putter – and avoid the short yip like the tragic three-footer he missed to lose to Spieth at last year’s U.S. Open – expect him to hoist the trophy Sunday.

Patrick Reed (World Rank: 10): The 25-year-old Texas native and four-time PGA Tour winner is a rare breed. He doesn’t hit it far (he ranked 69th in driving distance last season) and doesn’t hit it straight (171st in driving accuracy), but the boy just keeps improving. A runner-up in Maui to start his 2016 season has given Reed a boost heading into the AT&T, where he’s finished in the top 15 in two of his three starts. If Reed can find Pebble’s narrow fairways, he’ll find himself in the top five at week’s end.
