Good thing Bonnie “Prince” Billie has two full days to play music; the guy has put together a prolific catalog of albums since first recording in 1993. He’s joined by Reverent Sisters, Fountainsun, Heron Oblivion and Meg Baird, with whom he’ll be sharing two stages on the Fernwood Resort property: one outdoor stage and one stage indoors at the resort’s bar and grill. Two-day passes include all the music one can handle and (never enough) camping along the Big Sur River. This is a weekend for music lovers to experience a soulful blend of Americana, blues, folk, punk, rock, roots and country with five distinctive and independent acts.

Gillian Welch is the most special kind of anomaly. Raised in L.A., educated at UC Santa Cruz and Boston’s Berklee School of Music, she’s gone on to become perhaps the most singular bluegrass artist of her generation. Though criticized early in her career for not having authentic Appalachian roots, those criticisms have since given way to the highest kind of praise. The Washington Post has called her “one of the most interesting singer-songwriters of her generation,” and the Guardian named her “one of the decade’s greatest talents.” She’s won a Grammy for the two songs she contributed to the award-winning O’ Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack, and Sept. 16 of this year, she and her musical partner Dave Rawlings will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association in Nashville. Tonight’s show in Monterey is nothing short of coup for local bluegrass fans.

In 2010, photographer Rachael Short was paralyzed in a car accident in Big Sur and left a quadriplegic. For one year she didn’t take a photograph due to her lack of mobility. But when she could, she picked up an iPhone and began taking photographs again. Kim Weston suggested platinum printing those pictures. Which she did. This photography show is the result, Short’s comeback, three years in the making. It opens today.

The magic of the musical ensemble is that many instruments with many voices join forces to form a unified sound. But that can make it hard for a listener to hear the virtuosity of the individual players that make up the bigger group. New York Chamber Soloists is made up of 12 musical stars who mix and match into different small groups to perform chamber music, with an ear for letting the player shine—each soloist stars in their own right. Armin Hansen: The Artful Voyage Art Opening

Artist Armin Hansen (1886-1957) portrayed the heroic labor and nautical skill of Monterey fishermen from Portugal, Sicily and Japan who bravely crewed salmon trawlers on the Monterey Bay in the early 1900s. As one of the first members of the Carmel Art Association and a founding member of the Monterey History and Art Association, Hansen was deeply involved in Monterey’s famous artist colony. This art show – the biggest he’s received, with almost 100 pieces – is curated by Scott Shields of the Crocker Art Museum, who examines the artist’s life in his book Armin Hansen: The Artful Voyage, and it’s organized by the Pasadena Museum of California Art. On Nov. 13, Shields gives a talk at Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Sail away.

CATS saunters into Carmel’s Golden Bough Theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, which tells the tale of a group of felines called the Jellicles. On one fateful night, they must make the ultimate decision, or “the Jellicle choice,” as to which member of their clan will rise to the Heaviside Layer and trade in one life for the next. Directed and choreographed by Joe Neison, CATS is expected to deliver a playful song and dance of a show with cat-chy tunes (no kitten).

Soweto Gospel Choir

The 24-person Soweto Gospel Choir is comprised of the best singers from church choirs throughout Soweto. They cover both traditional African gospel songs as well as American gospel music. Three weeks after releasing their 2002 album, Voices of Heaven, it was the number one album on Billboard’s World Music Chart. But they can’t be categorized in the world music genre exclusively. They have demonstrated their range and adaptability by playing with contemporary artists The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Josh Grobin – musicians from very distinctly different genres.

What does Steinbeck have to do with comics? Well he himself wrote in an introduction to Al Capp’s The World of Li’l Abner: “One of the symptoms or diagnostics of literature should be, it seems to me, that it is read, that it amuses, moves, instructs, changes and criticizes people.” And Swiss artist Pierre Alain Bertola graphic-novelized the author’s Of Mice and Men. This popular event returns, filling the center with all manner of writers, artists, fans, creators and creatives. Don’t underestimate this stuff. The medium is comics, but the content is pure imagination. It starts with a kickoff at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas on Friday, and unfurls Saturday and Sunday at Marriott Hotel in Monterey.
