Salinas Valley Art Gallery features James Tyler Clark as its featured artist for September, responsible for the fall-theme gallery look this season. Clark is a young glass artist, introduced to the craft by a simple gift of an ornament-making box he received for Christmas. “From then on, I was hooked,” he says, adding he started taking glass-making classes in the summer of eighth grade. “When I was first learning, we did not have the funds to buy colored glass to use. So I started using ‘scrap’ to add color to my pieces.” (Scrap refers to what is left after a piece is done.) “Now that I am able to purchase color, I still love using scrap because this way no two pieces will ever be the same,” Clark continues. These days he makes glass paperweights, flowers, pumpkins and Christmas ornaments. Visit the gallery, located at 218 Main St., Salinas, from 5-8pm on Friday, Sept. 5 for an opening reception.
