George Saldivar studied with an inspirational teacher, Ray Sells, at Skyline Community College in the ’70s and continued to work with wood and stone while at San Francisco State. Currently, Saldivar, a retiree in Monterey, is exploring found wood, oak, laurel, applewood and walnut. His sculptures present organic curves, which can sometimes be interpreted as female forms. At times he includes designs of stained glass into his sculptures. Occasionally he employs an electrically-induced fractal burn called the Lechtenberg effect to his designs. Visit the Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation Gallery to see more of his work and over 30 other local artists at their new exhibit, Arts & Unique, opening Saturday, May 4; it will be up until July 28. Open daily from 11-5pm. 655-1267, mpaf.org.
