David Cross has a minor problem with names.
The quirky cult sitcom Arrested Development, which Cross starred in as Tobias Fünke, was sued for infringement by the rap group of the same name. He was planning on calling his comedy tour “Making America Great Again!” That wasn’t to be, as a press release notes: “Because of fear of litigation from a certain bloviating orange someone, the name of the tour will unfortunately be changing. But my name won’t be. So use that.”
Named one of the top 100 stand-up comedians of all time by Comedy Central, Cross launched this tour Jan. 26. He says his main comedic influences are Andy Kaufman and Steven Wright.
“If there are a couple of adjectives people use to describe me, anger is usually in there,” he once said. “I’ve never taken that as criticism. It’s the way I communicate. But I’m not faux-angry, like Lewis Black, or angry like a gun-toting crazy person. I’m angry in a mild way – it’s not like I’m going to do anything about it.”
Cross has also enjoyed a decorated and versatile career. His comedy special, David Cross: The Pride is Back, aired on HBO in 1999, and was named one of the 25 best stand-up comedy specials and concert films of all time by Rolling Stone in July 2015. He has appeared in such films as Waiting for Guffman and Men in Black and has provided voices for several animated films like Kung Fu Panda (p. 42).
His introduction to TV came with The Ben Stiller Show, where Cross shared an Emmy for writing. Cult comedy hero status followed with HBO’s Mr. Show. He also wrote and directed the indie film Hits, a black comedy about the nature of fame in the YouTube era. More recently, Cross created, wrote, executive produced and starred in 2010’s The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, playing an ill-equipped American who runs the London sales office of the energy drink company. He last toured in 2009 with a solo stand-up show in support of his New York Times bestseller I Drink for a Reason.
“I decided it’s time to dip my stand-up comedy toe back in the, doing-stand-up-on-stage-in-something-that-resembles-a-tour, water,” Cross continues in the event announcement (he declined an interview). “I’ve got well over an hour of delightfully bawdy material. I was very busy writing for The View, but now that the kids are off to college, my wife’s regiment has been transferred to the South Pole, and I’m near completion on Fallout 4, it’s time to start up the bus and bring my fart-inducing laugh winces to a town near you.”
