YettiFest is rapidly gaining name recognition. The brainchild of towering Bull and Bear regular/reggae enthusiast Kevin Padilla, aka “Yetti,” YettiFest began as a showcase of a more than a dozen local reggae and blues acts in 2015. It made a triumphant return in 2016 with 30 bands, including international artists HIRIE, Kalisa and Jordan T, who played for enthusiastic crowds on the back patio of The Bull and Bear for Labor Day weekend. Now that it’s an established brand, and Bull and Bear owner Anthony Buich aims to make the most of it.
“We want to evolve YettiFest,” he says.
That means ultimately relocating to a larger venue, and even pioneering shows in other cities, while keeping with the production’s tradition of philanthropy.
YettiFest Halloween represents the first expansion beyond Labor Day weekend. Local and regionally popular reggae and blues bands like Tony Miles, Bandorama and Jake Nielson’s Triple Threat will perform, as well as others.
Former The Voice contestant Naia Kete, who Rolling Stone dubbed “an earthy soulstress,” headlines on Friday night with her SayReal band. Her honeyed voice and acoustic guitar slant on pop-reggae is buoyant and crisp. Her sweet, stripped-down take on Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” embodies the iconic song’s message about positivity with exceptional sincerity.
Hawaii’s Guidance Band top the bill on Sunday evening with roots reggae via funky keyboards, classic rock guitar riffs and smoky lyrics.
The event kicks off on Thursday with seasonal food and drink specials and the World Series on multiple LCD screens, as pumpkin guts get chucked during a mass carving competition which will be judged Friday night. (Some pumpkins are provided per a first come, first served basis. Contestants are encouraged to bring their own pumpkins and carving tools.) Saturday night includes a costume competition. Sunday features Eddie’s open mic and NFL football. Radio personality John Michael of the Hippo radio hosts a Halloween party on Monday.
Throughout the weekend, brand ambassadors weave through crowds to offer samples of iconic Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka. Discount tickets are available in advance online through YettiFest’s ticket retailer at www.universe.com/yettifest_halloween.
