Juicy Juice

“My vocals are a lot stronger live than they are in the studio,” says local musician Tom Faia. “I think we’re going to catch some of that on [the new] record.”

In mid-March, Tom Faia and The Juice recorded 13 songs in two days. The longtime local musician doesn’t exactly know how they knocked out an entire album so quickly, but knows that recording live with a group of tight-knit rockers had something to do with it.

On his five previous records, Faia used a rotating roster of polished local musicians including Dennis Murphy, Jim Norris and Tom Ayres. This time he let it flow with his band, with Dave Evert on guitar, Scott Rudoni on bass and Bill Kucher on drums.

They put together the as-yet-untitled album at the storied Prairie Sun Recording Studios in Cotati, California. A range of decorated artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Booker T. Jones and Wu Tang Clan, have also recorded there.

Faia says the band should get the credit for making the recording process go so smoothly. The songs he’s been playing for years, he adds, have an entirely different presence with The Juice.

Faia describes the new music as “danceable blues rock” and while he’s penned an array of thematically straightforward tunes about about love lost and love gained – “Born to Love You” and “Love Will Be Alright” – Faia’s quick to sing samples of some of his goofier songs over the phone. “The Pick-up King” is from the perspective of an oblivious womanizer armed with cheesy lines: “Got any more wishes, baby? I do have big hands and big feet/ Just call me coffee – I grind so fine,” Faia croons.

“Cheater’s Nightmare,” meanwhile, is from the point of view of an unfaithful guy who wakes up to discover that his woman is clenching a knife close to his body under the covers.

The punchline: “There’s no waking up from a cheater’s nightmare.”
