Soon after Lindsey Stirling’s Saturday performance at the Golden State Theatre was announced, tickets sold out. With acts like Willie Nelson, B.B. King and Band of Horses, that’s expected, but I was surprised about Lindsey Stirling’s surge in sales, mostly because I hadn’t heard of her. After some research, it quickly became clear how big of a star she is. For those not hip to the 28-year-old redhead’s fame, here are five nuggets that affirm it:
1. On Jan. 9, Stirling was featured in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list, alongside Azealia Banks and Ed Sheeran, which showcased the “greatest gathering of young game changers, movers and makers.” That same day, Billboard announced that a pair of Stirling’s albums, Shatter Me and Lindsey Stirling, had reached the first and second position as the best-selling dance-electronic albums in 2014.
2. Her YouTube videos have racked up more than 675 million views; some songs have simultaneously made it onto the Billboard Dance/Electronic Chart and the Billboard Classical Album Chart.
3. In 2013, Stirling competed in Dance Showdown, a dance competition web series where the winner gets $50,000. The multi-talented star came in second of three finalists.
4. When Stirling surfaced on America’s Got Talent in 2010, the judges were impressed not only by her merger of hip-hop and classical music on the violin, but by her incorporation of dancing while playing the violin, which she’s become known for doing during her energetic live performances. (She was a quarter finalist. )
5. Last November, Stirling joined world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli for his U.K. and Ireland tour; in 2014, Stirling’s self-titled record went gold in Poland and received a platinum certification in Germany.
LINDSEY STIRLING 8pm Saturday, Jan. 31. Golden State Theatre, 417 Alvarado St., Monterey. Sold out. 649-1070.
