The Vibrators lead a six-part punk concert at the Fox in Salinas.

With its glam bell bottoms and mirrored disco balls, much mid-’70s pop music was a fairly superficial affair. As a reaction to that perceived musical somnambulance, punk rock/new wave music launched with sneers and attitude in both the UK and in Southern California nearly simultaneously over 30 years ago.

Side by side with Sid Vicious’ Sex Pistols and The Clash in 1976 were London locals The Vibrators. Now legendary mainstays of the Die Laughing Records stable of artists, the veteran punk rockers blow through Salinas for a fourth time this weekend atop a billing featuring six other punk bands.

Promoter Jason Martinez celebrates 20 years of staging Monterey County punk shows with this one, and he also fronts the band Infirmities as their lead singer, who will appear as well.

“This will be The Vibrators’ last USA tour ever,” he says. “Some taxation issues with the UK government have made it economically infeasible for them to continue to tour the U.S.”

Joining those two bands will be San Francisco-based Screaming Bloody Marys, F.U.X. from Salinas’ Sam’z School of Rock, Monterey’s own Drunk with Power, San Jose-based Panhandlers Union, and C.P.R. from Huntington Beach in what promises to be a late afternoon/early evening full-on sonic assault.

“Twenty years ago it was a lot harder to book punk bands than it is today,” Martinez says. “Back then, not everybody wanted to host a punk band at their bar.”

The event is all ages, with a bar for those 21 and up.

Also available at the show will be a 7-inch vinyl disc from The Vibrators and Screaming Bloody Marys.
