The varied backgrounds of The Ten Tenors (or “TTT”) help the ensemble transcend a classic crossover genre. Their specialty and “badge of honor” is singing animated cover songs – anything from rock ‘n’ roll hits to Broadway tunes to classical arias – often eliciting spirited cheering and dancing audiences.
While all 10 members are tenors, there’s a lot of depth that comes through. “When we do our arrangements it really pays off to have that many guys because of the amount of different songs we can do,” says Jared Newall, one of the 10.
Melbourne-based Newall has been with the ensemble just shy of seven years. He’s performed in more than 20 countries, including Singapore, Argentina, Belgium, Norway, South Africa and Russia.
TTT started thanks to a party. In 1995, Australia’s Channel 10 news station turned 10 years old. The network pulled singers from a local conservatory to perform as the “Channel 10 Tenors” for a birthday celebration. The Brisbane group continued to sing for beer money and play local theater gigs. Eventually, they were invited to perform on Eurovision’s 2002 song contest, then seemingly out of nowhere, sold out a six-week long show in Hamburg, Germany. The group started touring Europe regularly, then the U.S.
Now 23 years post-Channel 10, there are all new members, though some have been in the group for nearly a decade.
The band revels in music, sharing ditties with each other on the tour bus: “We listen to music more than we sing it every single day,” Newall says. “And that informs the next shows.”
Their current tour name is the title of their 2017 album, Wish You Were Here. It commemorates beloved artists that have died in recent years, among them David Bowie, Prince, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson.
In mid-2016, the group selected songs by artists they wanted to pay tribute to, and the group’s music arranger Steven Baker put the pieces together. Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” David Bowie’s “Heroes” and Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” all made the cut.
Their high-energy performance also goes beyond music; it’s impressively choreographed, with bold and entertaining moves.
To keep the audience on their toes, two favorite medleys are in this new show, Newall says: “I’ll keep them a surprise, but they’re such a joy, and they always get a gasp out of the audience and then they get them dancing.”
