Hundreds of car-centric rock songs have been recorded, including The Beach Boys’ “Fun Fun Fun” and Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline,” but nothing quite like the Hot Toddies’ surf doo-wop number “Jaguar Love.”
“Cruisin’ in the fast lane, you may call me a whore/ I don’t give a shit cause my car is better than yours,” sings the female trio in bright three-part harmony.
Along with their infectious on-stage energy, “Jaguar Love” represents a taste of a humor-laden catalog that’s helped the Toddies pack area venues regularly. Over the past couple years, lifetime landmarks – including drummer Sylvia Hurtado having a baby last year – have slowed the rate of Toddies shows. But the trio has continued to compile new tunes with hopes of a yet-to-be-titled full-length record arriving in summer 2017.
Guitarist/vocalist Erin Skidmore describes the new material as a return to their punk/garage roots. The Toddies, who also feature bassist Heidi Bodeson, brought on a keyboardist following their 2007 full-length debut Smell the Mitten, but have since returned to a trio.
“We’re rediscovering the simple riffs and grungier sounds we like to make without that added element,” Skidmore says. “The keys added a lot of pop vibes.”
She adds that the Toddies will unveil some of their new songs, including “Gross Gals,” on Saturday at Pierce Ranch along with the older fan favorites.
Meanwhile, since drummer Clara Nieto and singer/guitarist Christina Riley formed Burnt Palms back in February 2012, they’ve evolved into a quartet, adding bassist Brian Dela Cruz and guitarist Joshua Vazquez. The Seaside group’s brand of early-’90s grunge, however, remains thoroughly intact on tracks like “Never Met You,” from the outfit’s recently released vinyl Back on My Wall.
THE HOT TODDIES and BURNT PALMS 8pm Saturday, Nov. 12. Pierce Ranch Vineyards, 499 Wave St., Monterey. $10. 372-8900, www.piercevineyards.com.
