Countless bottles of Jameson whiskey and boxes of pizza were consumed as The Hot Toddies crafted their latest album titled Get Your Heart On. But, according to band members Erin Skidmore and Sylvia Hurtado – who spoke to the Weekly on speakerphone from a storage closet within Skidmore’s workplace – that wasn’t the only thing that prolonged the making of their follow-up to 2007’s Smell the Mitten.
“There were a lot of takes we had to do, because a lot of times, we were laughing at each other,” Hurtado says.
Even though there’s plenty of grin-inducing lyrics on Get Your Heart On – like the spicy double entendres in “Slow Cookin’” – the ladies’ new release also serves up generous helpings of impressive musicianship.
With a driving bass line and a surf rock guitar sound that bends like a wave in a breeze, “Max’s Mankini” evokes The B-52s and The Go-Go’s. “Keep on Runnin’ (The Vampire Song)” with its big rock sound and harmonizing vocals is the band’s most fully realized song yet.
The just-over-a-minute-long punk blast “Matt Skiba Sandwich” exposes their crushes on the Alkaline Trio frontman. The Hot Toddies, who are on the same record label as Alkaline Trio, met Skiba after recording the song. “Hopefully, he doesn’t think we are too creepy,” Skidmore says.
Other female-led groups like Best Coast and Vivian Girls have hit it big by embracing the fun lyrics and surf rock-girl group hybrid that The Hot Toddies have utilized across their 5-year career. But the ladies aren’t bothered that their party is swelling. “We have more bands to play with now,” Hurtado says, “than just punk and metal bands.”
THE HOT TODDIES, POOR BAILEY and GRAHAM PATZNER play 7pm Friday, Jan. 21, at the East Village Coffee Lounge, 498 Washington St., Monterey. All ages. $7. 373-5601.
