The Beatles’ 'Yellow Submarine' returns to the big screen, restored and remixed for its 50th anniversary.

Once the Blue Meanies show up with hatred in their hearts and apples poised for bonking, things do not go well for the peaceful, music-loving residents of Pepperland.

You probably know the rest – or at least did 50 years ago when The Beatles’ Yellow Submarineflowed psychedelic colors and a familiar soundtrack over big screens. The film that transformed animation returns to theaters, restored and remixed, to celebrate its anniversary with a showing at Golden State Theatre.

The wild story takes place 80,000 leagues beneath the sea. The Blue Meanies, who happen to despise music, unleash their army of Storm Bloopers and a flying glove. Through apple bonking and a cone of music silence, the meanies subdue Pepperland. But one old-timer escapes in a convenient yellow submarine, makes his way to Liverpool and persuades The Beatles to come to the rescue.

“Yellow Submarine” had hit the charts as a song in 1966. It reappears in the film soundtrack, along with favorites like “Eleanor Rigby,” “Nowhere Man” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

The film includes moments of retina-popping optical art, frame-by-frame sketching of live action to animation known as rotoscoping, tinted photography and other techniques somehow both clashing and complementing. This added a degree of difficulty to the restoration. A team lead by Paul Rutan Jr. at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque worked one frame at a time, taking the images to 4K digital resolution by hand. The music was remixed – fittingly – at Universal Music Group’s Abbey Road Studios to 5.1 stereo surround sound.

Yellow Submarine has never been seen and never been heard like this before.
