On Edge

The Santa Cruz-based Speakeasy 3 was founded in 2014 by guitarist Scott Stobbe and singer Stella D’Oro. The band has quickly become a local cult favorite; fans wear swing and ’20s attire to dance wildly to Prohibition-era covers.

Fernwood Campground and Resort is usually at capacity in summer, but today tourism sits at 60 percent of normal figures. Meanwhile, the restaurant is seeing fewer local regulars who live south of the collapsed Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge.

Fernwood stayed open throughout the storms and mudslides, making it a retreat for the fire brigade and locals who, despite the irony of living next to boundless coast, were landlocked by mudslides.

Except for a few cancelled shows in February, Fernwood continues to curate live music every Saturday. “Because Big Sur loves to dance,” General Manager Diana Ballantyne says.

Few bands cater dance music better than Speakeasy 3. “They have a cool, juke joint sound that people associate with intimate, unique venues,” Ballantyne says.

Scott Stobbe was exposed to Prohibition-era jazz on his first trip to New Orleans 10 years ago while on tour with a gypsy-folk band from Portland.

He describes warm nights on Royal Street where musicians played a collection of clubs on the row and busked outside. He now makes a pilgrimage to New Orleans several times a year and recently purchased a home there.

The music video for the band’s lively cover of George L. Cobb’s 1915 “The Alabama Jubilee” has vocalist Stella D’Oro shimmying to a saxophone, upright bass and Stobbe’s manic banjo on black-and-white film. D’Oro is a femme fatale whose pert facial expressions correspond with her playful vocals.

“People are in a unique position to see Big Sur in its peace and serenity,” Ballantyne says by way of invitation.

But she hopes the dance floor is crowded on Saturday night.

SPEAKEASY 3 10pm Saturday, June 24. Fernwood Bar and Grill, 47200 Highway 1, Big Sur. No cover. 667-2129, fernwoodbigsur.com
