Sky Country frontman Nico Georis has a unique take on his band’s latest album, Warm Storm.
“It’s dreamy, but not pensive,” he explains. “It’s like that feeling when you’re hungover, but the happiest you’ve ever been.”
A few tracks in, his assessment not only checks out, it would be hard to be more accurate.
While 2015’s Pacific Garage’s focused on capturing the crunchy, fuzzy purity of garage rock, Warm Storm focuses more on tone and stimulating the sensation of an endless, sepia-tinted summer.
The title track is a hazy, sun-bleached and foreboding dream. Your own warm storm is approaching beneath thin a layer of static and placid harmonies.
“We spent a lot of time researching a creamy tone,” Georis says. “A lot of that had to do with finding rare, vintage equipment.”
One piece of that equipment includes a PA Tube Amp that was used in the 1940s, like ones used by classic country icons like Hank Williams.
Warm Storm was a more collaborative effort than Sky Country’s previous albums. The band members’ chemistry also benefits from playing prolific numbers of live shows. In addition to Georis on guitar and lead vocals, the lineup includes Mikey Selbicky on guitar and vocals, Adam Zerbe on vocals and bass, and Will Condon on drums.
A handful of the songs were the result of jam sessions. “Baja Red” is a sound check recorded over a scrapped song, which combined create a supernatural take on an island melody, evoking the happy hangover Georis describes.
Sky Country plays two shows this weekend, the first at the American Legion Hall in Carmel on Friday with native cello shredding phenomenon Rushad Eggleston. Sky Country’s Friday performance at the American Legion Hall is in memoriam to the late local honky tonk player Larry Hosford, who began his career singing on Cannery Row. Sky Country produced Hosford’s final album, Momentarily Yours.
They will also perform at Fernwood Tavern in Big Sur on Saturday with 1960s garage rock purists The Tomb Weavers.
