Sierra Ferrell comes to share her eccentric sound and lesson-worthy tales at the Golden State Theatre.

Our favorite elementary school teachers were often the ones who let us into their worlds. For sixth-grade teacher Megan Munson, sharing her love of music with students as she teaches not only connects with them but also enhances her lessons by opening their minds up to the diversity of sound. It’s fitting that Munson is a bit of a superfan of Sierra Ferrell, because like Munson, her ability to captivate is in the stories she has to tell.

Ferrell’s sound walks the line of folksy Americana and country twang you’d hear at the Grand Ole Opry, where she debuted in 2022. Her musicality and vocal range has led to collaborations with several stars of their respective genres including Margo Price, Diplo and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Last October, Munson was elated to see Ferrell perform with Shakey Graves at the Rebels & Renegades festival. The singer’s prowess is the relatability to her lyrics – authenticity about routines of life. “A lot of her songs come back to that feeling of hoping, loving and longing,” Munson says, reflecting on how her lyrics describe bare necessities of humanity.

Munson was first introduced to Ferrell when she found her ethereal declaration “In Dreams.” She put the song on repeat, falling in love with the whimsical imagery accompanied by soft, twangy guitar – an ethos that Munson brings to her classroom.

“I think [Ferrell’s] story is how she stands true to who she is, and wants that for other women,” Munson says.

While “In Dreams” showcases Ferrell’s unique interpretation of jazz, other songs, like newly released single “Dollar Bill Bar,” put the spotlight on her acoustic guitar work. Yet that’s followed up by the fast-paced feet stomping melody of her fiddle in “Fox Hunt.”

Ferrell’s upcoming album, Trail of Flowers – set to be released later this month – is an ode to eccentricity, from ripping bluegrass to the forgotten grit of the roadhouse honky-tonk then slowing it down to touching ballads.

The Nashville-based West Virginian has worked her way up from years of living in her van and busking on the streets, and she has the lyrics of her travels to share with us on her “Shoot For the Moon” tour. And much like growing up in general, the artist says her new album is about deepening the urgency of her songs, making her stories worth hearing.
