Salinas teen rockers August Sky continue to impress – and get even younger.

Sky’s the Limit: The Mills twins add a fresh element to the up-and-coming act.

The members of August Sky may not be old enough to drive, but they are old enough to channel the yodels of Robert Plant. As a result, their afterschool activities don’t include Nintendo Wii; they’re consumed with band practice, recording sessions, songwriting and voice, guitar and drum lessons.

Guitarist/vocalist Erich Drollinger, 13, and drummer Nathan Hagler, 14, have been rocking Monterey County with classic covers and originals for nearly two years. About eight months ago they brought on 15-year-old bassist David Criswell. And less than a month ago the lineup became complete with its youngest members: 12-year-old twins Paige and Fallon Mills. This Saturday, the quintet will have the opportunity to show off their double-trouble addition at The Pizza Factory in Salinas.

The twins hooked up with the band after running into Drollinger at the orthodontist.

“My mom started talking to their mom and gave them our CD,” he says.

“We really liked [the CD] so we tried out and it worked,” Paige says. “We want to get famous and be in movies and sing.”

Though Paige and Fallon have only been in the band for a short time, they’re quickly finding their niche.

“‘Rock of Ages’ is our favorite song,” they say in unison.

“Because we sound really good on it,” Fallon adds.

Fittingly, August Sky finished its first album, That’s Rock & Roll, in August.

“It took a long time, but it was fun ’cause we got to play a lot of tag in Aptos,” Hagler says.

After a four-song set at the United Agribusiness League dinner at the Monterey Plaza Hotel, the band members talk about their most outlandish gig, the future, their influences, and smooching slimy critters.

They all agree that their second-ever show, at the Moss Landing Inn, was their craziest.

“Some girl fell on Erich,” Hagler says.

“It was freaky,” Drollinger adds. “And then some guy gave me a lottery ticket after we played.”

They all have very different musical preferences, from Lady Gaga and Wolfmother to Kiss and Garth Brooks.

As far as making it as a rock band, they try to keep a realistic perspective.

“I’m somewhat pessimistic; this could go somewhere but it’s going to be a lot of work,” Hagler says. “If it doesn’t, it will still be a good experience, and we’re going to be doing this for a long time.”

Talking about the band’s future stirs up some questions about what happens when Criswell, the oldest member of the band, goes to college.

“I could always go to San Jose,” Criswell says.

“You should go to Berkeley,” Hagler suggests.

But with this bunch of creative kids, serious college conversation gives way to silliness rather rapidly.

“Where do they have the banana slugs?” Drollinger asks. “I kissed a banana slug once and it numbed my lips.”

AUGUST SKY plays 8:30pm Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Pizza Factory, 926 South Main St., Salinas. $5. 758-3227.
