T-Bone Burnett produced Raising Sand, embellishing the stripped-down accompaniment and the two plain-spoken voices in billowing reverb for a “Mystery Train” Sun Studio effect. The music includes plaintive country ballads, low-simmering blues-rock and songs less categorized, conjuring sad European cafés and hazy, folky psychedelia. Raising Sand is an unexpected, thoroughly likable outing by a pair of artists working to produce contemporary music from timeless sources.
