Rising rocker Jacob Ellzey brings a new trio to hometown Monterey.

As soon as he turned 21 last year, Jacob Ellzey eagerly attended “blues jams” at Marina’s most popular dive bar, Mortimer’s. He played with artists more than twice his age, but there was nothing uncomfortable about it. Ellzey is a quintessential old soul – a garage rock prodigy of the ’60s living in modern times.

He played lead guitar and acted as songwriter for beloved Pacific Grove psychedelic teen group The Pip Squeeks. When that group disbanded, he joined an equally popular group of indie rockers, El Camino Sutra.

He’s still active in El Camino, but since moving to Santa Cruz to attend school, he has formed Jacob Ellzey and the Shoobies, a throwback ’60s blues and garage trio.

Ellzey recruited band members by posting flyers throughout Santa Cruz. He named his influences – a list of vintage and modern garage and blues bands including The Sonics and Thee Oh Sees – as well as Monterey-grown acts The Mystery Lights and The Tomb Weavers.

Ellzey taught himself to play guitar at 12 by voraciously consuming tutorial YouTube videos.

When he was older, he found mentorship from local musician Martin Shears. Equally as important, he discovered those ’60s garage rock and blues bands who would shape his sound with guidance from the proprietor of Vinyl Revolution and The Tomb Weavers drummer, Bob Gamber.

Ellzey and company are recording an EP in early July and expect to release it in winter of this year. For now, they have released a four-track demo on Sound Cloud.

Those songs are raw in the most excellent sense of the term. Ellzey’s guitar is crunchy but complex and – at times – sludgy. Evan Hildebrand brutalizes his drum kit and Alex Vareljian creates an undercurrent of surf rock on bass.

Ellzey drops in on his home turf with the Shoobies on Sunday at East Village. Youthful and raucous punk/folk Santa Cruz outfit Adult School opens, as does psych-grunge-pop group Highland Eyeway, who is stopping in Monterey on their West Coast tour.
