Reggae-rock outfit Tomorrows Bad Seeds play in Salinas..

It’s 2pm on Thursday in Boise, Idaho. Moises Juarez just woke up. The Tomorrows Bad Seeds’ lead singer says the post-show partying went until sunrise, with good reason: The group was celebrating a sold-out show in Park City, Utah, following a string of sold-out shows across the Midwest.

It’s a chunk of good news for the Hermosa Beach-based Seeds that they’ve been bringing out large crowds, since it’s only been a few months since they started touring again after a three-year hiatus.

The group’s start came in 2003. Juarez doesn’t deny that initially the band aimed to be the next Sublime. Their infectious tapestry of reggae-rock, ska and pop-punk, with a touch of hip-hop – along with magnetic chemistry and perseverance – helped them gain a worldwide fan base. By 2009, TBS, which features Juarez, Sean Chapman (guitar/vocals), Matthew McEwan (guitar), Pat Salmon (drums) and Andre Davis (bass), was touring with the likes of Fishbone, Slightly Stoopid, the legendary Wailers and the Vans Warped Tour, and selling out shows internationally. In 2010, they won the “Commercial Success Award” at the Los Angeles Music Awards.

After eight years of nonstop touring and their third full-length record, The Great Escape, was panned by both critics and fans, TBS came to a halt in 2012.

“It was a combination of things,” Juarez explains. “Mostly, we hadn’t taken any time for ourselves for awhile.”

During the break Juarez and his girlfriend had a baby boy, so being on the road wasn’t an option. But the music never stopped. Juarez, Chapman and McEwan formed an alt-rock side project, LIFE, that garnered some solid acclaim. Juarez says he also used TBS’s extended break to “sharpen my skills as a musician.”

A couple months before the end of 2015, the L.A. crew felt it was time to replant the Seeds. They released their first new single, “Throwback.” Produced by Lewis Richards, the upbeat tune, featuring R&B singer Garrett Douglas, is an acoustic sing-a-long that radiates with the spirit of L.A. and Pepper’s brand of reggae-rock. “Throwback” will appear on TBS’s fourth, yet-to-be-titled, full-length album – produced by Ras MG (Marshall Goodman), who was a member of the original Sublime lineup – due out in June.

After the SoCal band’s sellout show in Idaho, they double back to the Northwest for a pair of shows in Washington and Oregon, respectively, before making their way back to their home state. Friday night’s show will be a warm up for the 2016 Cali Roots Fest May 27-29, the group’s third appearance.
