Oscillator Records hosts a night of doom, stoner and thrash metal at the Blue Fin.

For James Findlay, free time is apparently about as comfortable as crossing the Mojave in a pair of tightie-whities three sizes too small. The multi-instrumentalist fills his time pounding out percussion as the drummer for metal outfit Razorhoof, working on his solo prog rock concoction Concave, running the indie record label Oscillator Records and managing a fulltime job as an assistant to film composer/winemaker Alan Silvestri.

He’s added another item to his full plate with his latest project, Landmasses, a stoner rock instrumental trio a la Fu Man Chu that was born a couple years back as a stripped-down, straight-ahead power trio rock that doesn’t feature the odd time signatures or washed out guitars that propel Concave.

“This is some of the best stuff I’ve written but it wasn’t really Concave appropriate,” Findlay explains. “I’ve been playing with Chris [Lyman], the drummer, for a while and we finally got it going.”

Along with bassist Chris Portfolio and Lyman (of Turn Me On Dead Man and formerly Giant Squid), Findlay is churning out fresh rock odysseys like the High on Fire-esque, tribal rhythm soaked “Leave the Engineering to the Engineers” and the potent storm of distortion “Landmasses Sinking Ships.”

“Since we are instrumental we get to be creative with titling,” Findlay says.

Findlay says Landmasses is even beginning to take on some more post-punk and rhythmically complex math-rock leanings, in the vein of Drive Like Jehu.

If you want to hear the band for yourself you’ll have to go to Blue Fin on Saturday – stoner desert rockers Lesbian, Grayceon and Granted Earth also perform – because there aren’t any plans to release a record in the near future.

If only Findlay had more free time.

Also of note from the loaded playbill: Grayceon electric cellist Jackie Perez Gratz has performed on a plethora of albums by Bay Area rockers, with groups ranging from Matmos and Today is the Day to Amber Asylum and Two Gallants. Meanwhile, Lesbian’s 2007 debut Power Hor featured a sticker plastered to every record deeming the crew “The New Wave of American Psychedelic Metal.” And local raucous faves Granted Earth unload a bounty of catchy face-melting metal in the spirit of acts like Fucked Up and Mastodon.
