Triple Threat

From left, Sam Wegman (vocals/guitar), Jed Overly (drums) and Charles Tern (vocals/guitar) are finishing up a two-week tour in their new van, “affectionately named Goldfinger by its last owner.”

There aren’t any traditional musical genres that can suitably sum up what Astro Tan churns out. But the first single off the Portland trio’s forthcoming LP, Canary, “HYFY” (an acronym for “Hell Yeah Fuck Yeah”), comes close to sonically defining the outfit’s brand of organized chaos in just under three minutes. It feels like acid jazz-textured rhythmic dissonance, a wall of Sonic Youth-flavored distortion with lustrous lead vocals under the influence of Morrissey and mini moments of vintage Motown backup harmonies.

Following a Sunday matinee show at The Starry Plough in Berkeley, Sam Wegman (vocals/guitar) explained how it happened: namely, by virtue of crowding three songwriters in a single band to create complexly layered sound – as well as an extensive catalog.

“We often play three-hour gigs, which is a benefit of multiple pens in the band,” Wegman says. “We try and lean into our rhythms on stage and we love R&B music – we try to emote that accordingly.”

While Wegman, Charles Tern (vocals/guitar) and Jed Overly (drums) all come from various musical backgrounds, an affinity for jazz, including the work of guitar greats Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino, is mutual.

“The early songs were ideas totally unwritten,” Wegman explains. “The newer material sees us getting to know one another and expressing ourselves as a unit.”

Local favorites Sky Country’s Will and Mikey are set to open with a unique blend of beach bum-meets-spaghetti western freak folk.
