Ojo de Buey delivers positivity to Salinas by way of Costa Rica.

The direct translation of pura vida is pure life. But when it’s used in Costa Rica as a greeting, it means much more. Cayeto, lead singer of Latin reggae outfit Ojo de Buey, sayspura vida is akin to saying, “Hey man, I’m full of life.” The eight-piece band strives to relay that sentiment through its sound.

“We try to live pura vida every day and it shows it in our music,” Cayeto says. “We take all the good things out of life and put it in the music.”

Based on a solid roots-reggae foundation, the Costa Rican natives stir in a mix of rock, cumbia and salsa that goes down easy, like “Ya No” and the mellow, roots-driven “Dime La Verdad.”

Cayeto explains that there isn’t any one genre that confines Ojo. Its music is without boundaries – or rules.

Thematically, most of the tunes center on love, nature and making positive changes in the world.

“The songs are also about our kind of revolution,” Cayeto adds. “A revolution with positive messages. Live and let live as long as you don’t hurt anyone.”

So far, Ojo has been embraced globally, sharing international stages with the likes of SOJA, The Wailers and Rebelution. Its full-length debut Sabor En Un Tiempo Cruel scored Costa Rica’s biggest music award for Best Reggae Album of the Year.

A couple weeks ago, the octet embarked on its first U.S. tour. Last week they played the Cali Roots Festival, the largest reggae-rock event in the world. Then Friday, they hit Casa Sorrento with Dela Roots & the Cool Bus Experience.

It appears as though audiences in the States are embracing Ojo’s message.

“We were a little scared people wouldn’t get the message because of the language barrier,” Cayeto says. “But there’s been total connection [with the audiences] from the beginning.”
