Earlier this month, Daniel Vasquez, a co-founder of the popular local reggae band Jonah and the Whalewatchers, was killed by an alleged drunk driver while riding his bicycle on Highway 1 by Point Lobos. A percussionist, Vasquez left the group a decade ago but has performed with the band sporadically since.
This Thursday, the current members of Jonah and the Whalewatchers will perform a special memorial concert for Vasquez featuring guest appearances by former members of the 16-year-old band. In addition to videos and photos detailing Vasquez’s life, the Yellow Cab Company will offer free local rides to patrons as an alternative to drinking and driving.
Jonah and the Whalewatchers play Monterey Live, 414 Alvarado St. in Monterey, Thursday, Feb. 22, at 9pm. No cover. 375-5483.
