Monterey County’s favorite Latino rockers have a bold new album debuting at Sly McFly’s on Cannery Row.

Sam Martinez missed the local reggae renaissance by a few years when his band of 20 years, Catch-a-Beat, called it quits in the ’90s.

But his replacement band, Chicano All-Stars, has picked up the slack and then some: They’ve been rocking the party for 16 years. Now they’re right on time for the latest Latino Rock revival, as evidenced by the recent popularity of Los Angeles bands like Chicano Batman and La Santa Cecilia.

Chicano All-Stars play Friday at Sly McFly’s on Cannery Row. Initially, the band hoped to release its new CD at this show, but as has been the constant during Martinez’s career, timing came into play.

“You can’t really rush the mix,” said Martinez, who has spent the past three decades-plus as a professional sound engineer. “One song, it took 16 hours to mix. You never know.”

Fans in attendance at the Sly McFly’s show will get to hear some of tunes that will appear on the new CD.

A few weeks ago, Martinez posted a Throwback Thursday pic of Catch-A-Beat, drawing props from local reggae artist Lujan. “He said ‘You’re roots,’” said Martinez, beaming with pride over his status as a local reggae pioneer.

Martinez’s good standing as one of the area’s original roots-reggae champions has carried over into the All-Stars. While their set mostly covers of a wide range of recognizable dancefloor hits, the All-Stars drop a rasta vibe into the Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

The band draws from the energy of Latin Rock heroes like Sapo, Malo and Santana, mixing funky cumbia rhythms and a new horn section to great effect. The band’s cover of Sam and Dave’s “Hold On” is accentuated by the relentless horns of Bob Netzly and Todd Clickard.

Then there’s the cumbia flavors. The All-Stars take on standards like “Cumbia del Sol” helps the party get turned up. For Martinez, the cumbias serve as a bridge to his former band’s sound.

“It’s fun music, very similar to when I was doing the Caribbean stuff back in the reggae scene,” he says.

Then there’s Martinez’s long-held passion project, Samz School of Rock. Recently, the school band joined the festivities when Aerosmith rocked Salinas.

“I wish I had that growing up,” says Martinez, who graduated from Gonzales High School and spent his formative years playing garage party gigs. “Now I’m just getting these kids on real stages and my dream is for one of them to make it.”

It’s all in the timing, as el maestro Martinez has likely figured out after so many decades in the game.
