Going Boom

No matter the genre or the coast, Lukas Papenfusscline brings some serious pipes.

Classically trained vocalist Lukas Papenfusscline knows where to seek out his creations.

“I always find songs through my voice,” he says. “I sing songs, then elements like a banjo or some percussion becomes evident.”

That resonant voice, delivered from his gut and tuned in his throat, drives the song “Pharoah” with very little instrumental backing.

The New York City based folk artist began playing the piano as a young child. He picked up a guitar when he was 13 and started training as a vocalist at 15.

Papenfusscline’s lifelong ambition to make music carried him to Boston, where he earned dual degrees from Tufts University and the New England Conservatory. His most recent recording laid down 10 tracks, backed by a band of friends, in a NYC apartment.

Despite a jazz background, he charted a path making folk music five years ago. He credits his hippie parents for exposing him to folk music and says he’s found artistic liberation in the genre.

“Jazz can be very intimidating and scholarly,” he says. “I found so much room to grow playing folk.”

That doesn’t mean he’s abandoned his love for jazz.He collaborated with his mentor, jazz pianist Ran Blake, on a live recording of “The Thrill Is Gone.”

Blake caresses the piano keys as Paperfusscline sings softly – until a vigorous chorus that showcases Paperfusscline’s powerful voice and Blake’s masterful piano playing.

A Bay Area native, Paperfusscline says playing in Northern California feels like a homecoming after playing and recording on the East Coast for years.

Alternative rock band Sunshifters open with their local debut.
