Lissie’s 2016 release, My Wild West, tracks her bittersweet departure from California. After residing in Southern California for 11 years, she moved back to her home state, Illinois, where she purchased a fixer-up farm.
After five years of playing solo at small venues in L.A., Lissie landed a gig touring with Lenny Kravitz in 2009 when her honest acoustic folk songs and cursive voice were discovered on MySpace. The same year, she signed with the national label Fat Possum Records. Her 2010 debut album, Catching a Tiger, stands alongside the work of her contemporaries Neko Case and Angel Olsen for its carefully accented take on modern female country/folk, as well as her all-powerful vocals. Her 2013 album, Back to Forever, slanted more toward pop, but was still anchored by her singular voice and female empowerment, as evident in the power-pop song “Shameless.”
“I don’t want to be famous/ if I got to be shameless/ if you don’t know my name/ so what.”
It was that confidence that guided her to move from L.A. to Ojai, which she calls a “refuge from the city.” It has now also led her to Illinois.
She recollects the peace of Ojai on the acoustic track by the same name.
“Ojai, I don’t want to leave you behind/ but you know I’ve made up my mind/ so goodbye.”
By contrast, “Hollywood” captures her conflicted feelings about living in L.A.
“I fell in love with Hollywood/ I fell in love with a dream/ no matter how they try to warn you/ you fall apart at the seams.”
The final stanza of “Hollywood” summarizes the chapter My Wild West closes for Lissie: “Oh, Hollywood/ you fed my dreams like I knew you would/ but, oh, Hollywood/ you don’t own me.”
Lissie’s performance at Folktale Winery in the soaring barrel room is part of KRML’s “Live in the Vines” series.
