El Muy Pop

Camila owns three Latin Grammys.

A good pop song transcends time, genre and radio airwaves. Camila’s pop meets those marks, plus one more: language.

Camila’s members are verifiable superstars in Mexico and wider Latin America. They have 7.5 million followers on Facebook, album sales that have gone multi-platinum, and tours that have visited 18 countries.

Their single “Todo Cambio” (or “Everything Changed”) from their 2006 album of the same title, proves that songwriters Mario Domm (piano) and Pablo Hurtado (guitar) have a sharp intuition for crafting indelible pop songs – it’s a stirring song whether you understand the Spanish lyrics or not.

It also evokes a Billy Joel ballad, with instrumentals before the first verse that further conjure barstool blues. Hurtado plays piano, and while his ivories don’t know what your problems are, the music commiserates with you anyway. A lonely electric guitar joins in on the blues. But “Todo Cambio” doesn’t share the same dry humor of “Piano Man.” Instead, it’s about love that changes you, awakening hope and providing courage.

Both Domm and Hurtado were accomplished independent musicians before Camila. Domm wrote and produced songs performed by other Latin American artists, several of which charted on Billboard’s Top Latin Songs and received Latin Grammy awards. Domm produced his own solo album Mexi-Funky-Music in 2001, which was received with enthusiasm by fans and critics.

Hurtado learned to play the piano classical guitar when he was a small child. He studied audio engineering at Fermatta Music School in Mexico. There he was exposed to jazz, blues, funk and pop. His education in multiple genres and crisp guitar chops – both acoustic and electric – proved to be valuable contributions.

Camila’s popularity reaches beyond radio play and Billboard charts to the small screen. Their song “Coleccionista de Canciones” is the theme song for the popular telenovela Las Dos Caras de Ana. The song is about what Camila does very well: romance. It’s quietly passionate, about loving someone so much you feel your soul merge with theirs.

Camila’s show at the Fox comes as part of a brief tour of California.
