Nobody puts King Kong Zilla in a corner, because there’s no corner –or category –for their mutant, disobedient, genre-crossbreeding sound.
On “Nutter Fluffier BLT,” singer Will Chason’s intentionally off-key vocals open a narrative about an average late-night snack craving. “Everything is whack… I think I’ll get my ass off the couch and make myself a snack.” The refrigerator raid is underscored by breezy jazz. The narrator discovers wilted lettuce, bacon and marshmallows. “It’s my greatest fantasy,” Chason sings.
King Kong Zilla formed in 2012 when lead guitarist/vocalist Chason and bassist Alex Schwartz relocated from Vermont to the Bay Area, where they hooked up with drummer Isaac Pond. Both Chason and Schwartz have backgrounds in jazz, which manifests itself in several instrumental eight-minute-plus compositions that take the listener through a sonic labyrinth with oblique turns veering from prog rock synthesizer and feedback manipulation to scat jazz choruses and frays into noisy jam sessions.
“The Gator” is a consummate example of King Kong Zilla’s formula in play.
“It’s just your average nine-minute tune about going down to a swamp in the South and confronting the gator that ate your brother,” Schwartz says.
Feedback makes a funky bass wobble beside thrashing electric guitar and synthesizer. The busy arrangement underscores a vision of wrestling a slippery, gnarly gator and inhaling pond scum.
Isaac Pond, who alternates lead vocals with Chason, tells the epic tale in a low, gravelly growl that Pond himself describes as “rough around the edges” and “Cookie-Monster-ish.”
