Recorded over four years between her former residence in Indianapolis and her new home in Oakland, Kate Lamont’s soon-to-be-released album, What Happens Next Is Everything, is about her journey coexisting as a parent and an artist.
She calls it the most personal album of her solo career, which spans seven years. Her three studio albums and two EPs blend soul, electronica and hip-hop. Her diverse influences range from Joni Mitchell to Prince to A Tribe Called Quest to The Roots.
The common thread is her deep, soulful voice, which sinks into arrangements of hip-hop beats that flow as melodically as folk songs.
Here she breaks down three songs from What Happens Next is Everything for the Weekly, with a few lyrical excerpts:
“On Again” •Insight: “This was the first song [producer Tyler Emrick] started working on for What Happens Next. It’s the story of the parent flipping the switch on again and returning to the role of being an artist. In my case, it happened over four years as I navigated between seemingly different worlds.” •Lyric: “I feel more everyday/ I’m on my way/ back on this train.”
“2 Forever One 4 Me” (Featuring Bay Area hip-hop artist Kev Choice) •Insight: “It’s dedicated to my favorite artist, Prince, who passed away while I was recording What Happens Next. It’s an amalgamation of story fragments that started with a dream I had about meeting Prince. It morphed into a story of a love affair between artists ending too soon in apologetic reflection.” •Lyric: “I’m sorry to let you down/ because love is all I’ve been betting on/ peace is what I’m waiting on.”
“Wounded Knee” •Insight: “It’s about how parenting never leaves my mind. From thinking about finding the right partner to learning major lessons about humanity and death.” •Lyric: “If I fell on this wounded knee/ what would that teach my child about ambivalence.”
Lamont collaborates with musician Joseph Velasquez on saxophone at her performance at The Venue in Seaside on Saturday. A barbecue-themed potluck begins at 6:30pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm.
