Pipe Hit

Thomas Joyce is also a pianist, singer, conductor, composer and teacher.

Tucked away in the tiny town of Lake City, Iowa, Dobson Pipe Organ Builders has been manufacturing some of the finest pipe organs the planet knows for over 30 years. Their installations are customized to both the physical and acoustical environs. Like a composer would, the company gives an opus number to each one.

Opus 94 was installed at Carmel Valley’s St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in 2015. Workers came in shifts for eight weeks to assemble it. The church redesigned and remodeled the sanctuary to accommodate the organ.

“It was amazing to watch,” Rev. Rob Fisher recalls. “We actually ripped up the carpet on the recommendation of an acoustical engineer and it enhanced the sound in a magical way.”

St. Dunstan’s Music Director Steve Denmark consulted about stops and tonal choices during the installation.

“It emulates a small orchestra in tone color better than any other organ,” he says. “It can be both strong and very warm. And it has the ability to be quite potent without sounding harsh.”

Or as the instrument’s designer/builder Lynn Dobson proclaims, “A pipe organ at its best should excite the air.”

“Simply having the organ has already had a collateral effect on our entire music program due to its appeal, versatility and power,” Denmark adds.

The organ’s concert debut was in June, and its second outing of a five-event series is on tap this weekend, when the congregation hosts acclaimed concert organist Thomas Joyce of Santa Barbara. The recital features organ masterworks from the minds of Bustehude, J.S. Bach, Bossi, Schumann, Vierbe and Charles-Marie Widor. All proceeds go to the organ fund. A wine-and-cheese reception with the artist follows the show.
