First came the classes. As they have for 35 years, advanced players received coaching and instruction from some of the world’s finest symphony and chamber players, hailing from everywhere from the New York Philharmonic to the Cleveland Orchestra. Legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and acclaimed composer Samuel Barber helped launch the educational tradition that continues to this day, with an addition: affordable concerts starring the instructors.
“The concerts arose to show the students their teachers can do what they ask them to do in class,” quips Peter T. Meckel, Hidden Valley’s founder and GM.
This year’s series began last week with oboist Elaine Douvas. New York-based flutist Keith Underwood takes up residence for classes June 12-17, with a recital Monday, June 13. Additional instructors/performers include jazz flutist Ali Ryerson (master classes June 12-17, concert Thursday, June 16); Cleveland Orchestra English horn soloist Robert Walters (June 19-25); and longtime New York Philharmonic Principal Bassoonist Judith LeClair (classes June 23-29; joint recital with Walters on English horn is Friday, June 24).
The last two shows include Philharmonic clarinetist Mark Nuccio (June 25-29; concert Monday, June 27); and this year’s series will conclude when Cleveland Orchestra Principal Cellist Mark Kosower offers master classes July 24-29, and joins forces with pianist Jee-Won Oh for a joint concert on Monday, July 25. “As members of a wonderful local community and an international musical family,” Meckel says, “we pledge our dedication to quality and substance in our work.”
