Heritage brings its pop-reggae-rock sounds to CRBC and Casa Sorrento.

When Heritage lead singer Tony Verrecchia entered the military, he brought with him his So-Cal surf/reggae vibe. It stayed intact while he was stationed in Germany for a couple of years, and it blossomed when he landed in Okaloosa County, Florida.

“Out there, the most reggae I ever heard was like Jimmy Buffet,” Verrecchia says of the culture shock he experienced in Florida. “To each his own, that’s just not my style.”

Verrecchia and Heritage bring their West Coast style of pop-reggae to Cannery Row Brewing Co. Friday; Saturday, they play a return show at Casa Sorrento in Salinas.

Verrecchia and the Heritage crew built their own scene in Okaloosa County, located in the northern part of the state next to the Alabama border.

The band, formed in 2007, was pivotal in bringing touring reggae acts to town.

Dirty Heads was the first band it brought in. Heritage eventually toured with them.

“We built this scene of people that just exponentially kept building and building,” he said.

The band is grateful to have come along right at the peak of American reggae’s rise in popularity.

“It’s hard to deny the music because it’s of such a positive nature,” said Verrecchia, reflecting on the current demand for American reggae bands all throughout the country. “When all you’re hearing on the radio is all this negativity, people are going to get sick of it, and they’re going to want to hear something else.”
