The Gyrating Hips’ catchy lyrics dovetail with high-energy tunes.

Louis Ramsay, the architect behind the band The Gyrating Hips, creates charming, energetic songs about relatable subjects. He exhibits talent for channeling quirky real-life experiences lyrics with the song “Stoned,” a stand-out track from his debut record, Bummer Jams.

His inspiration for the hazy-but-still-lively song came from a scenario he says he never thought would happen: getting high with his parents.

Hi visited his parents in Washington after recreational marijuana was legalized there. “My parents offered to smoke with me,” he says with a laugh. “Then I found out that my parents’ friends smoke. Everyone smokes.”

The song begins with the sound of a bong hit; coughing ensues. “My mama is getting stoned/ and my papa is getting stoned/ even my dog is getting stoned/ he ate all of his bowl,” Ramsay sings.

Ramsay’s playful delivery and distorted, fuzzy lo-fi production recalls one of his influences, indie star Mac DeMarco.

Ramsay, who holds a degree in audio-engineering, recorded Bummer Jams alone in his bedroom in Burbank.

The Buddy Holly-esque track “Petty Things” calls out the banality of social media. “Musicians have to keep Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, and post on them every day,” Ramsay says. “I wish it wasn’t necessary and that putting out good music was enough.”

The lyrics echo that: “I don’t live my life through a status update/ my mind is free/ I don’t care about the petty things.”

He plays live with Kid Mystic on bass and Graham Leake on drums at his second appearance in Monterey.

He returns on Dec. 3 with a show at the Integrative Martial Arts Dojo in Seaside with local favorites Proudest Monkeys and American Trashbird.
