The era of guitar phenom Tom Ayres began in his high school days with a dance cover band called Jasmine T, and has been in perpetual motion ever since. The Monterey High grad has played with The Cubes, Cowboy Satellites, the Tom Ayres Band and Free Ears. More recently, Ayres has split his time between local blues rockers Mike Beck and The Bohemian Saints and Euro synth-pop outfit Persephone’s Bees, which led him to leave the Peninsula for New York City a few years ago.
He has added another band to his resume with the Eggs, who are set to play dance-infused rock music Friday and Saturday at Cooper’s Pub, in celebration of FIM Superbike Championship weekend.
The Eggs also feature local drummer Donnie Nix, a former member of the disbanded Big Sur rockers Wandering Minds and member of the popular Santa Cruz Beatles tribute White Album Ensemble, and multi-instrumental bassist Endre Tarczy, also a member of White Album Ensemble, on Friday.
On Saturday, Ayres and Nix will team with longtime local jazz player Pete Hoegemeier on bass and fellow former Wandering Minds member Donnie Dickman on keys.
About a year ago, this same quartet got together – before becoming the Eggs – and packed Cuz’s Sportsman’s Club in Seaside for a show billed “A Night of Rock ‘n’ Roll with Tom Ayres.” The dynamic guitarist led a classic rock-fueled set that ranged from Hendrix to Clapton. This weekend, Ayres’ masterful arpeggios, soaked in the spirit of of past masters, will fill the coastal air once again. Only this time, he’ll serve a double helping.
