Green Jelly is a word combination that subconsciously evokes the 1990s kids in listeners, maybe because we watched B-list celebrities get “slimed” on Nickelodeon with a bucket of unidentifiable green goo.
These days, millennials reminisce about those days by watching 10-year-old re-runs of VH1’s “I Love the ‘90s” and cling to the show’s nostalgic trivia about things we don’t actually fully remember – from carpet fiber to Gak.
One of those things is the metal/punk shlock rock band, Green Jelly. Like most cool things in the ’90s, they emerged from obscurity in the ’80s.
Green Jelly formerly billed themselves as “The world’s worst band” due to being novices at playing their instruments. Their original name was Green Jell-O, but they were called out for copyright infringement by Kraft Foods.
The only original band member by ’90 was Bill Manspeaker. By then, he had recruited a competent rotating cast.
All Music reviewer Alex Henderson calls Green Jelly “comparable to GWAR, but exhibiting a goofy personality of its own.” He also noted that the band “takes itself as seriously as Spinal Tap.”
The music video for the band’s most memorable hit, “Three Little Pigs,” is a bizarre trip into a stop-motion scene set in Hollywood. Three pigs are trying to survive city life. They are depicted as wannabe rock star pig, a red-eyed stoner pig, and an obnoxious trust fund pig. They must be indebted to the Harley-riding, chain-smoking Wolf, but more likely in keeping with the Fairy Tale plot, the wolf is sadist with arbitrary targets.
A score of popular local and regional punk and metal acts open for Green Jelly at Planet Gemini on Friday. They include F.U.X., 808 Disturbing the Peace, The Eyesores, and Psychos in Love.
GREEN JELLY 8pm, Friday, May 13. Planet Gemini, 2110 N. Fremont St., Monterey. $20. www.planetgemini.com
