Even a bona fide folk legend like Happy Traum might have preferred his son Adam not follow in his footsteps.

“My dad understands better than most how difficult it is to be a working musician. I think he was hoping that I wouldn’t take the hard road like he did,” Adam says. “But these days I think deep down he really enjoys it. One day I’ll say the same thing to my son and he probably won’t listen to me either.”

The elder Traum made his mark recording with early folk icons like Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan. Adam blows through Carmel next week playing with another folk legend scion, seminal Texas songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s son Colin.

The two met at a father-son show at Doc’s Lab in San Francisco in 2016.

“In spite of being raised in different areas we had such similar experiences growing up that we had a lot in common,” Traum says. “We got along famously from the start. And that’s translated to touring – days on end in a car with one other person can be pretty rough if it’s the wrong person, but we get along great.”

Traum began as a rocker, studying Hendrix and others’ styles playing a 3/4-size Takamine his dad bought him. He then migrated to country blues and Delta blues and finally to Texas outlaw country like Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Billy Joe Shaver and Kris Kristofferson.

Before the duo’s arrival, The Lab’s Mike Scutari has booked an ambitious weekend, with three shows in three nights, starting with a mixture of traditional western music, cowboy blues and western swing from Dixie Dixon and her Cowboy Band on Friday. Think Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Cindy Walker.

“Dixie’s an honest-to-goodness cowgirl from Montana,” Scutari says.

Bring your dancin’ shoes Saturday when Oakland’s Trace Repeat plays.

“They’re like a really fun seven-piece Motown dance party,” Scutari says.

Sunday sees a Bob Dylan/Joan Baez tribute promoted by Kiki Wow, with Dan Frechette doing Dylan and Nicole Dillenberg as Baez with bassist Rick Chelew.

“It’s cool to have this much music,” Scutari says. “I’d love it if we could have music every Friday and Saturday.”
