Free Ride

Lovable local prog rockers Strawberry Girls – Zachary Garren, Benjamin Rosett, Ian Jennings – represent a taste of the free New Year’s Eve entertainment.

So gift-getting left you penniless. No problem. Put down your wallet and perk up your ears. Here come the best free music options:

1. Kick off New Year’s Eve with some of the area’s best jazz m usicians. Drummer David Morwood fronts an all-star band featuring several surprise faces near the Hyatt’s dramatic fireplace. Reservations recommended. Dancing encouraged. 7pm. Hyatt Regency Monterey, 1 Golf Course Road, Monterey. 372-1234.

2. Any night of the year, Sly’s is the one place you can always count on for booty-shaking. New Year’s Eve there may be a little more booty-shaking than usual. The Bay Area outfit Konsept Party Band deliver straightforward danceable R&B favorites, from Teena Marie and Cameo to Alicia Keys and Chaka Khan. 8pm. The Konsept Party Band at Sly McFly’s, 700 Cannery Row, Monterey. 649-8050.

3. Multicultural vibes and diversity will flow freely, along with the beer, at CRBC. San Diego-based Stranger pulls influences from reggae-roots, Latin jazz and good old SoCal rock. Meanwhile, Salinas’ own Dread I Knights – performing a special acoustic set – also weave tapestries of reggae, rock and Latin jazz. DJ Dread Ramas will be on hand to fill any gaps. 9pm. Cannery Row Brewing Company, 95 Prescott Ave., Monterey. 643-2722.

4. Between his custom-made action figures, Swarovski Crystal-studded tank tops and trademark ivory-feathered boa, rhinestone sunglasses and straw cowboy hat, it seems like it’s New Year’s any time Billy Martini’s in the house. Martini explains in a leathery rock-and-roll voice: “The ladies really love it so it just stuck.” What the ladies – and dudes – love even more: Martini’s repertoire of mostly one-hit wonders that people know but other bands don’t play, from Junior Walker and the Allstars’ “Shotgun” to Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love.” 10pm. Billy Martini at Fernwood, 47200 Highway 1, Big Sur. 667-2422.

5. If you want to get your Blue Fin on any earlier than 10:30pm, it’ll cost $10. After 10:30pm it’s free to hear Philip DJ Neato Ray, July DJ Toto Barredo and DJ KHOSMO fill the main room’s vast expanse with deep house beats until early-morning 2015. If you’re feeling like music that’s more organic, take it to the Glass Room where Strawberry Girls – recently signed to Tragic Hero Records – unload crunchy riffage coated in complexity, originality and infectiousness. The Cowboy Starr Project also delivers its original brand of alt-pop along with “feel-good” covers. Kyle Stark, Kismet frontman/former contestant on The Voice, will appear solo. 10:30pm. Blue Fin. 685 Cannery Row, Monterey. 717-4280.
