The Screamin’ Rebel Angels had its first tour through Belgium and Holland in May 2013. It also marked the first time the Brooklyn outfit performed at a prison.

“We pulled up to this old monastery that was turned into a low-security prison,” says lead singer Laura “Rebel Angel” Palmer. “We set up in this room, next to a library, and all these male prisoners start filing in. I asked the warden what kind of music the prisoners like and he said, ‘Anything with a girl in it.’”

The rockabilly band delivered a show lined with tunes like the sock-hop-throwback-meets-Carl-Perkins “Sizzle” and couldn’t resist covering Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” for an encore.

“When’s the next time we’ll have the chance to play in a prison?” Palmer says. “The prisoners took their shirts off and started twirling them above their head and throwing them at us.”

Palmer looks like she fell out of a 1950s magazine, with candy apple red hair, matching lipstick and nail polish, often performing in a leopard print halter top, black capris and three-inch pumps. More importantly, her voice is like a wild ride through a six-mile tire fire on the back of a chopper. She’s so engaging it’s hard to imagine she used to be terrified by the thought of performing.

“I had really bad stage fright,” Palmer says.

She spent several years booking shows and promoting in New York City. It satisfied her music fix without having to step on stage. Then, word of Palmer’s talent got out and the bands she booked started coaxing her into joining them to sing. It wasn’t long before Screamin’ Rebel Angels rose from the asphalt.

“I guess I got over the fear,” Palmer says.
