Two reasons inspired Santa Cruz singer Donna Sede and guitarist Jeff Ebbage to put together a Linda Ronstadt tribute: It was musically different than anything in the area and Sede was able to hit about every octave the ’70s pop princess can.
“[Ronstadt’s] vocal range is the same as mine,” Sede says. “I’ve been singing her songs since I was 8 or 9 years old.”
The tribute came together swiftly, and their debut last May at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz went brilliantly. News of Ronstadt revealing she has Parkinson’s – just a month after the band was born – gave the tribute additional meaning.
Sede, while devastated, felt compelled to take the tribute to a higher level.
“We came up with a new list of songs that would be easy to recreate live, while maintaining the essence of the way the recorded version’s sound,” she explains.
Ronstadt’s versatile repertoire features everything from the late-’60s folk classic “Different Drum” to early ’80s pop to a diverse slew of iconic covers, including Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross” and the Stones’ “Tumbling Dice.”
But there are certain songs from Ronstadt’s vast catalog that are especially meaningful for Sede, like her rendition of Roy Orbison’s 1963 “Blue Bayou,” which Sede says was her “introduction” to Ronstadt; she used all her babysitting money to buy the record when she was 16. Ronstadt’s take on Karla Bonoff’s “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me,” is another one of Sede’s faves.
“There’s something so haunting about that song,” she says.
Sede has always dreamt of singing alongside Ronstadt. But she now just hopes her hero will endure a debilitating disease with typical courage. Sede will keep the music alive, and do a little Parkinson’s fundraising along the way.
LINDA RONSTADT TRIBUTE featuring DONNA SEDE 8pm Friday, Feb. 27. Haute Enchilada Social Club, 7902 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing. $12/advance; $15/door. 633-5843.
