Someone tell that cabrón Donald Trump that illegal aliens have nothing on the blood thirsty aliens in Rings of Saturn’s music. Those are the real enemy.

Rings of Saturn invade La Movida in Salinas as a tuneup for a nationwide tour. They headline a lineup that includes The Soothing Sound of Flight, Aenimus, Asterion, Behold the Desecration and Genethliac.

Bay Area deathcore kings Rings of Saturn have locked down the alien invasion narrative with intense verve. Their 2014 album Lugal Ki E picks up after our alien overlords have settled into authority and are now just having fun with us: “What do you hope to prove?” they sing on “Senseless Massacre.” “Other than the fact your species deserves a permanent fucking extinction.”

Mann delivers the murderous rulers’ declarations with fiendish delight, while his band mates jackhammer away on the track with other-worldly precision.

The drums penetrate like a military drill line from hell. Guitars shriek like sirens from late-80s Public Enemy tracks. But there is a discipline to their mayhem. For all of its guttural urges, Rings of Saturn adheres to a regimented detail. The drums demand technical aggression and the guitar licks are timed exquisitely.

Last year, the band came under scrutiny when ex-guitarist Joel Omans called out Mann’s dedication to the deathcore craft. The term “hack” was used. Based on the band’s popularity and non-stop wave of touring, Mann and his crew appear to have handled the brush back.

Which is good, because when the aliens do take over, Rings of Saturn will be able to say, told you so.
