Clear Sailing

Clear Conscience has appeared at numerous reggae festivals, including the California Roots Festival in Monterey.

Clear Conscience’s “Island Feeling” melts music lovers like ice in a Malibu rum cocktail.

Its lyrics and hypnotic reggae beats also work like bonfire voodoo on a balmy night at a star-illuminated Caribbean beach. A love spell cast on two people is about to expire: “Only teardrops can be found/ This island singin’, we’re both still drinkin’/ But when the morning comes/ I know you’ll be gone.”

The five-person reggae/rock/hip-hop Oakland-based outfit Clear Conscience formed 10 years ago, and in the decade since, the band has released nine albums and played with big-name reggae artists like Half Pint and Born Jamericans.

Their upcoming appearance at Planet Gemini in Monterey reflects the type of dynamic entertainment Planet’s new owners, Surya Shrestha and Sanjay Lacoul, are hoping to host more often.

Live comedy, long a staple at Planet Gemini, no longer takes place. Wednesdays and Sundays are designated for Latino music, delivered via live bands and DJs. Fridays are reserved for live music of all genres. Saturdays will alternate between different genres of live music and Latino music.

Upcoming live music events include Celtic rockers Hung Clover performing on March 18 for a post St. Patty’s Day celebration. April’s planned headliners include punk super-group Implants – comprised of members from celebrated underground punk bands Tank, Pulley, Strung Out, Ten Foo Pole and Voodoo Glowsticks – on April 9. Capitola-based hard rockers Rumble Steelskin will headline a night of metal music April 29.

The locally-loved feel-good Salinas reggae band Pacific Grown opens for Clear Conscience this Saturday night.
