Casey Royer and D.I. do The Planet with potent punk.

Punk music spontaneously combusted mid-’70s when London’s Sex Pistols and New York’s Ramones gave their first concerts and dropped debut albums within weeks of one another. Most Europeans point to the Pistols as punk’s progenitor, while Americans (and especially New Yorkers) call The Ramones punk rock’s pappy.

The epicenter for the West Coast version was Fullerton, when, at about that same time SoCal bands like Black Flag, Agent Orange and Social Distortion came forward. One of the true patriarchs of the Orange County punk scene comes to town this weekend when drummer-turned-lead-singer Casey Royer – formerly of Social Distortion, Adolescents and Detours – brings his decades-long punk project to Planet Gemini, aka The Planet.

The group’s name is D.I., a shortened play on DIY, which is to say, “Do it.” In typical punk fashion, their intent is to keep it raw and direct, as heard in Livin’ in the USA, from their 1985 release Horse Cries, Dogs Bite: “Take another breath of that toxic waste/ everytime I go to the store/ read all the directions what a bore/ don’t think I’m gonna live too long/ just as long as I can sing this song.”

Not exactly uplifting, but it seeks to give voice to the alienation of modern life.

“We used to look up to you/ Johnny’s got a problem/ he’s outta control/ he’s got static on the brain/ Johnny’s got a problem,” Royer shouts, backed by thunderous drums and blitzkrieg guitar power chords. It’s very fast, crushingly loud, and often disturbing, especially the videos, many of which glorify violence, blood and destruction. “God’s creation has reached insanity/ all the world’s leaders are such liars,” Royers sings on one, “They’ll be doomed/burning flesh into the fire /burning flesh into the fire,” with pictures to match.

Theirs is an iconoclastic – even nihilistic – lot, and frankly, they don’t really care if you like them or not. Like their Euro counterparts they are anti-hippie, anti-Pink Floyd, and especially anti-Beatles.

Together with their punk brethren, D.I. rails against the somnambulism of mainstream music – you know, disco and all of that – along with the deceptive nature of modern culture, from the media to government to the trials and tribulations of everyday life, all while rejecting their perceived arrogance of our current financial and political times.
