The Carolyn Sills Combo’s flavor of gourmet country peels back the layers of western roots to tuck in genuine storytelling, solid musicianship, tight arrangements and good times.
After their self-titled debut album was released in 2013, last year’s Dime Stories, Vol. 2 is an homage to “pulp cowboy comics” one would find in an antique shop – stories of baseball, Buffalo Bill and canoes engage a listener’s full attention. Which is what bassist Sills gravitates to in her writing: “songs with poignant and witty lyrics, or just a good story,” she says.
Although Sills prefers to write songs from experience, she writes fantastic fiction. “Even Villains Once Were Babies” tells a tale of the lamenting mothers of outlaws. “I was listening to Marty Robbins and I thought, ‘How would he write a song from a woman’s perspective?’” Sills says.
Early country music is perpetually being digested through the combo. Ennio Morricone’s climactic soundtracks spawned a collection of their swing songs. Patsy Cline (for whom the combo plays an 85th birthday party in September) is Sills’ biggest vocal muse. Merle Travis influenced the way Egan picks his guitar, while Bob Wills’ legendary live performances inspire the band to put on a proper party for their audience.
The combo plans to do just that for two nights in a row. Their Sept. 1 show at Henry Miller Lab features more intimate narrative songs and spaghetti-Western tunes. The following evening at Fernwood is a western swing dance party. Both shows highlight what the combo has mastered: a golden era of storytelling in the tune of yesterday’s honky-tonk.
