Salsa Funk

Many modern Latin beat bands owe a special debt to the pioneering work of Carlos Santana and his various projects, and the Bay Area group Camino is no exception. The musical devices employed by the band are textbook “Evil Ways” (as in the Top 100 release made famous by the 1969 album, Santana). The tune revolutionized the rock music of its time, infusing the genre with Latin rhythms, chords and soloing straight out of flamenco and salsa.

This seven-member, high-octane band is fronted by the sultry alto Katya Greene, programmed to offer up infectious rhythms and consuming dance grooves.

Founded in 2014, they call their music world fusion, an accurate moniker. Their July 2016 debut release Walking in Fire is a polished first effort showcasing not only Latin influences, but elements borrowed from jazz, funk and even Arabic origins.

“They are young, excited and full of life,” says promoter Kiki Wow. “The music is very lively and energetic, and they get people dancing. They have this salsa funk thing that makes everyone move.”

The rhythms are fueled by a drummer, a conga player and a percussionist, who support a guitarist, bassist and sax player. All songs are original, save for a covering of jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s “First Light,” the lone instrumental.

In the studio, the seven players were joined by a second female vocalist, as well as working with a second conga drummer. There is a little R&B here to boot (“Polyester Burning”), along with the disco funk of the title cut and the disco nuevo of “Naima Katya.” The disc includes veritable trance-like moments in both “Oooh Oooh Child” and also in a 7-minute cut titled “No Time.” The band stomps its way through downtown Monterey this weekend. Put on your dancing shoes.
