Dance Chance

From left, Kenny Chung, Cecilia Cafiero and Steven Belleci make up C the Circus. They perform Cafiero’s originals, which emphasize simple themes like love and happiness.

A weekend lineup of trios at Barmel offers an assortment of rock flavors. Friday evening hosts Monterey-based Cecilia Cafiero and her band, C the Circus. Along with Kenny Chung on bass and Steven Belleci on drums, Cafiero plays indie rock influenced by folk, pop and punk. Originally from Bend, Oregon, her rich voice blends with riffs reminiscent of early-’90s alternative glory and melodies familiar to jam bands of the ’70s.

Circus’ live shows feature Cafiero’s original ditties. “I try my best to write very happy stuff,” she says. Songs of love, and everyday instances are charged with energetic drums and a groovy bassline.

C the Circus is preceded by Americana from Joe Scardina and Ace De La Verne.

The following night, Devine & Company from the San Francisco Bay Area drop by to play their original blues, folk and cover tunes. James Devine on guitar and vocals, Tim Connor on drums and harmonies and Sam Miller on bass, dedicate half their shows to a healthy array of covers ranging from Tom Petty to Mac DeMarco to Shaggy. Their sound is like a good bourbon shot – Devine’s vivid yet smokey voice goes down easy with fast-paced rhythms, leaving listeners enthusiastically foot-stomping.

Nuggets from their repertoire include Devine’s original blues track “Ain’t No Other Woman,” parlayed into Van Morrison’s “Gloria” and/or The Beatles’ “Get Back.”

The trio feeds off the crowd, fulfilling hollered requests – even for songs they’ve never played before. “We’re trying to make people happy, trying to make people dance, or trying to make people think,” Devine says. “People want to dance and have a good time so that’s what we do.”
