Queen B might not be arriving herself, but her hive is buzzing together once more.
Beyoncé’s OG band, who backed her through “Déjà vu,” “Single Ladies” and other live-concert hits (wait – all her songs are live concert hits though?), are some of the most talented and visionary musicians in the game. They all wield their own hefty resumes.
Saxophonist Tia Fuller is a full-time professor at Berklee College of Music, a Grammy-nominated artist and a force to be reckoned with in the world of jazz, R&B and pop. Producer and multi-instrumentalist Micki Miller has rocked the underground music world with her fresh takes on R&B, hip-hop and gospel mixing her technical ability (that she perfected at yes, you guessed it, Berklee) and her intuition to create approachable yet vibrant compositions. You get the picture.
Joining Fuller and Miller are women like Marcie Chapa, a percussionist for the Oakland Symphony. She has also worked with the likes of Jay Z, J. Lo and Mary J. Blige. Kat Rodriguez is a vocalist, saxophonist and winner of the International Women in Jazz award. Nikki Glaspie, the prolific Berklee-educated percussionist toured with Beyoncé’s backing band Suga Mama. And of course there’s Divinity Roxx, a globally respected bass player.
Roxx got her start at a bass camp. So maybe it’s no surprise that she, like all of these women, has a passion for keeping the love of music alive, especially through youth music programs. So proceeds from the performance go toward North Monterey County High School’s music program, which is in need of new band uniforms and funds to cover transportation costs.
