Sitting across from someone like Joe Walsh at the family dinner table wasn’t out of character at the time, nor did it impress Kelly Finnigan as a kid. Rock royalty around the Finnigans’ Los Angeles home was just the way it was, growing up with a father who was an in-demand professional musician (organ/keys player Mike Finnigan), who regularly toured and recorded with everyone from Etta James and Jimi Hendrix to Buddy Guy and Taj Mahal.

“I had my own journey being around the music business and coming at music from a different angle,” explains Monophonics lead singer/keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. “San Francisco and Oakland have so much culture and embrace music and different types of music that it was a big thing for the rest of the band’s path growing up in the [Bay Area].”

With the Monophonics, a Bay Area-based self-described psychedelic soul group, Finnigan, Austin Bohlman (drums), Ian McDonald (guitar/vocals), Ryan Scott (trumpet/vocals/percussion) and Max Ramey (bass), deliver a baseball bat to a piñata full of Sly and the Family Stone, early Rolling Stones, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The J.B.’s and some heavy Vanilla Fudge on top.

Last February, the outfit released Mirrors, a six-track all-covers EP featuring favorite deep cuts like The Main Ingredient’s rendition of “Summer Breeze” and the blue-eyed soul of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ classic “Beggin.” Monophonics even include a unique Mediterranean-tinged take on The Mamas & the Papas’ 1965 favorite “California Dreamin’,” which needs to be heard to be believed.

It’s all about “sharpening our knives to re-create stuff or just dig into a song to figure out what it is we like about the song,” Finnigan says of Mirrors. Currently, the outfit is about 70-percent into its forthcoming full-length studio release, which Finnigan aims to have out in summer 2019.

In addition to sharing the stage with two late-great nuvo-soul icons Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, evidence of Monophonics’ growing popularity is consistent and constant: Last August, they performed two packed shows at the monster Outside Lands Festival.

Harold Ray and the East Side Dynamite kick off the night with their volatile artillery of rock and soul, and the multi-talented DJ Hanif Wondir is set to seamlessly spin shiny gems throughout the night.
